Main Penaeus Orientalis Breeding Patterns in China
Water Convectional Circulation and High Density Breeding Pattern
This breeding pattern is called upland aquaculture pond breeding model in South China, which has grown fast in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan ever since 1996. It is an intensive breeding model characterized by large investment, high output, fewer diseases and high survival rate. The water convectional circulation breeding pattern could basically control the source ofinfection of WSSV and cut off transmission of WSSV.

Plastic Film Covered Pond Breeding Pattern
The pollution-free healthy breeding pattern by laying a layer of plastic film in a
shrimp pond beforehand can effectively control outbreak and spread of WSSV,
as the plastic film is able to isolate the shrimp pond from the surrounding
environment and thus cut off pathogens and keep Penaeus Orientalis away
from bacterial diseases. This pattern could be adopted in high density shrimp
breeding. If the shrimp pond is more than 2.4 meters deep, installation of a
straight-flow aerator together with a sewage discharge system at pond center
and appropriate water refreshing could achieve more satisfying results.
Generally, every 0.066 hectare of land could accommodate 80,000 young
shrimps, and after a culture cycle of about 100 days, the output of a 0.066
hector of land could reach 1,000-1,500 KG with each kilogram including 40-50
shrimps. The shrimp pond is easy to be cleaned and dried in the sun, which
helps save many unnecessary expenses, such as costs of medicine and labor.

Plastic Film and Winter Shed Biological Safety Breeding Pattern
In this breeding pattern, SPF young Penaeus Orientalis is selected, and plastic film and cement are used for slope protection and plastic film is laid at bottoms of shrimp ponds in terms of technical measures; physical filtration, chemical disinfection and sedimentation together with biological measures are integrated to purify shrimp breeding water; winter sheds are employed to preserve heat and isolate horizontal transmission of pathogens. As a circulating water system is adopted, water does not have to be refreshed throughout the breeding process, which reduces pollution to environment. With a general pond area of 0.134-0.198 hector, the output of shrimps could reach 2,500KG/0.0667hector. In addition, effective cutting off of horizontal transmission of pathogens decreases occurrence of disease.

Factory Breeding Pattern
The factory breeding pattern belongs to a super-high density running water breeding pattern, which has the following features.
(1) Smaller breeding area: the common factory breeding area is 200-400 m2 and shapes of shrimp ponds and equipped facilities vary from place to place, while a relatively ideal factory breeding pond should be similar to the oblong elementary breeding pond in staged breeding and furnished with aerators at the bottom and a mobile cover or shed.
(2) High breeding density: the quantity of breeding for every 1/15hm2 reaches 500,000~600,000 shrimps and the ultimate output per 1/15hm2 is 2,500~3,000KG.
(3) Large water changing amount: in the middle and later breeding periods, the daily water changing amount exceeds 200% and it is usually necessary to conduct water intake and drainage around the clock, for which it is also named running water breeding in some places.
